Important Things to Know

Last updated: August 2, 2026

We’d rather say this clearly on its own page than bury it in the small print.

We are not attorneys

Been There Got Out is not a law firm, and we are not lawyers.

Nothing on this site, in our books, podcasts, videos, courses, or coaching is legal advice. We don’t represent you. Working with us does not create an attorney–client relationship.

We can help you understand how family court tends to work, think strategically, prepare, and communicate. We can’t tell you what the law requires in your case, draft your filings, or appear for you. You need a lawyer licensed where you live for that, and we’ll tell you when you do.

We are not therapists

Neither of us is a licensed mental health professional.

Nothing we provide is therapy, counseling, diagnosis, or treatment. When we talk about narcissism, personality disorders, or trauma, we’re describing patterns of behavior in general terms — not diagnosing anyone. Only a qualified professional who has actually evaluated a person can do that.

Much of what our clients go through calls for real therapeutic support. We think you should have both.

Nothing you tell us is privileged

This one is important, and easy to miss.

When you talk to your attorney, that conversation is privileged. When you talk to a licensed therapist, it’s generally protected too. When you talk to us, it isn’t — because we’re neither.

That means:

Our practical advice: keep the fact that you work with us to yourself. If the other party doesn’t know we exist, there’s nothing for them to ask about. This is covered in full in our Coaching Services Agreement.

We can’t guarantee any outcome

Nobody can, and you should be careful of anyone who says otherwise.

Family court results depend on your facts, your jurisdiction, your judge, the other party, the attorneys, and a great deal of chance. We’ve helped hundreds of people get better outcomes than they expected. We have never promised one, and we won’t.

Results are not typical

We share client stories and testimonials. They’re real, used with permission, and kept anonymous to protect the people in them.

They’re also not a prediction. Every case is different. What worked for one person may not work for you, and the results described are that person’s experience — not a representation of what you should expect.

Where anyone is compensated for an endorsement, we say so.

Our content is general information

The blog, the Answer Hub, the interviews, the podcast, our books, our free resources — all of it is general education, not advice about your situation.

Family law varies enormously between countries, between states, and honestly between courtrooms. What’s true in Connecticut may be wrong in Texas. What worked in front of one judge may fail in front of another. Check anything that matters with someone qualified where you live.

We work hard to be accurate and to cite good sources, but we can’t warrant that everything is complete, current, or right for you.

Our guests speak for themselves

We’ve interviewed hundreds of attorneys, therapists, evaluators, and other experts. Their views are their own. Hosting someone isn’t an endorsement of everything they say, and the same disclaimers apply — an attorney on our podcast isn’t your attorney.

You’re the one deciding

We’ll give you our honest read, tell you what we’ve seen work, and push back when we think you’re making a mistake. But every decision in your case is yours, and you’re the one who lives with it. We think that’s how it should be — you know things about your situation that we never will.
